What Is a Blood Moon
Why a totally eclipsed Moon turns red, in plain terms.
In modern popular and astronomical use, a "blood moon" refers to a totally eclipsed Full Moon — during a total lunar eclipse, Earth passes directly between the Sun and Moon, and instead of going fully dark, the Moon takes on a reddish-orange color, which is where the name comes from.
