"Waning" means shrinking — the Waning Gibbous is the mirror image of the Waxing Gibbous, covering the days right after Full Moon when illumination begins declining from 100% back toward 50%, but the disc still looks more than half lit, still gibbous-shaped, just now on the opposite side.

Because it follows Full Moon, the Waning Gibbous now rises later in the evening each night rather than earlier — it's above the horizon well into the night but increasingly, over the following nights, only becomes visible after most people are already asleep, then closer to midnight, and eventually not until the pre-dawn hours as the cycle continues toward Last Quarter.
